ST MULLINS |

Five miles south down the towpath along the River Barrow from
Graiguenamanagh, or the R729, and into County Carlow, is ST MULLINS
tucked away among wooded hills, with the open heights of the Blackstairs
Mountains beyond. Strolling through the village, you'll come across the
scant remains of a monastery, founded in 696 AD by St Moling, Bishop of
Ferns and Glendalough, and alongside them in the churchyard are the base
of a round tower and a very worn stone cross. Down beside the stream, at
the back of the ruins, a path leads to St Moling's Well, while near the
centre of the village stands a defensive earthwork, looking like a
sturdy pudding just shaken from its bowl.
Blanchfield's pub does regular soup and sandwiches and Teac Moling
offers B&B in a very pretty spot beside the river (tel 051/424665;
£40-55/¬50.79-69.84). The nearest shop is at Glynn, one and a half miles
away.
