PASSAGE EAST, CHEEKPOINT AND
WOODSTOWN |

| Immediately east of Waterford city, at the neck of its long harbour,
the pretty ferry village of PASSAGE EAST nestles under craggy hills, the
estuary slopes aflame with wild gorse. The ferry here connects with
Ballyhack in County Wexford (Passage East Car Ferry tel 051/382488) - a
particularly useful route east for cyclists, especially if you're making
for Rosslare or want to stay with the coast. If you want to stay , try
the Cois Abhann (tel 051/382190; £33-40/¬41.90-50.79). Across the water,
less than a mile from Ballyhack, there's an An Óige hostel at
Arthurstown (closed Oct-May; tel 051/389411). The tiny fishing village
of CHEEKPOINT , to the north of here, sits at the confluence of the
rivers Suir, Nore and Barrow, its chief draw the excellent seafood at
the Suir Inn . Coastal paths south of Passage East afford views over the
estuary to the Hook Head, County Wexford. The long sandy beach flanked
by deep woodland at WOODSTOWN , just over two miles south of Passage
East, takes some beating if you're looking for a quiet stroll or a
gentle dip. |
