BALLYHACK

Just half a mile to the north of Arthurstown lies the little village of BALLYHACK . From here a useful year-round car ferry service runs regularly across the harbour to Passage East in County Waterford, taking just ten minutes . Setting off the picturesque scene is Ballyhack Castle , a fine five-storey, sixteenth-century tower house. You can climb about halfway up the tower and enjoy a strong sense of its stout proportions (June-Sept Mon-Fri 10am-1pm & 2-6pm, Sat & Sun 10am-6pm; £1/1.27). The village's upmarket seafood restaurant , The Neptune (tel 051/389284), is held in high regard, while Byrne's is a pleasant quayside spot for a drink.

The magnificent ruin of Dunbrody Abbey (daily: April-June & Sept 10am-6pm; July & Aug 10am-7pm; £1.50/1.90) stands at the widening of the Barrow estuary, to the northeast of town off the R733. A thirteenth-century Cistercian foundation, it was altered in the sixteenth century after the Dissolution of the Monasteries, when the large central tower and adjacent buildings were added.
