| The first settlement along the coast, about fifteen miles west of
Glengarriff, is ADRIGOLE , a handful of houses stretching over a couple
of miles with no real centre. Just to the west of the junction for the
Healy Pass is a shop, a pub and a basic IHH hostel Hungry Hill Lodge (tel
027/60228) with good camping - phone ahead to check they are open; three
miles to the east you'll find a couple of old-style B&Bs : Bayview
Farmhouse (tel 027/60026; £26-33/¬33.01-41.90) with standard rooms and
lovely views of the sea, and the nearby Beechmount (closed Nov-Feb; tel
027/60075; £26-33/¬33.01-41.90). It's all wild and wonderful walking
country. Hungry Hill rises to 2251ft, a good climb rewarded by fabulous
views, hidden lakes and waterfalls, while the steep road through the
Healy Pass leads north to Lauragh, County Kerry, where there is an An
Óige hostel at Glanmore Lake (closed Oct-Easter; tel 064/83181). |
