ARCHILL SOUND |
| |
|
|
| |
| The bridge that crosses to the island will bring you first to ACHILL
SOUND . It's worth noting though, that on the left before crossing the
bridge stands a fine new hotel , Óstán Oiléan Acla (tel 098/45138,
www.achillislandhotel.com ; £55-70/¬69.84-88.88) which has an excellent
seafood restaurant offering fine views of the bay, and a lively bar that
often has traditional music in the evening. Also before the bridge,
opposite the Garda Station, you'll find the Station House Hostel (tel
098/45187), with good rooms, two kitchens and an open fire. On crossing
the bridge, faded beachballs and plastic buckets hang forlornly outside
a cluster of souvenir shops; there's a post office and bike rental at
Óstán gob A'choire , aka Achill Sound Hotel (tel 098/45245;
£33-40/¬41.90-50.79) which, like the souvenir shops, has seen better and
busier days. Achill Sound really isn't the best base for exploring the
island, but if you decide to go no further, it's worth pressing on a few
hundred yards for an excellent independent hostel , the Wild Haven (tel
098/45392), which does offer the comforts of warm duvets and an open
fire. |
